Every trial lawyer has a story — one forged in resilience, sharpened in the courtroom, and defined by preparation. 60 Minutes: Inside Trial Minds, presented by The Casely Group, brings those stories to life in high-definition, cinematic interviews. Produced at the highest standard of quality, the series captures both the heart and the strategy of some of America’s most respected attorneys.

In this episode, host Elvis Casely sits down with Randall K. “Randy” Calvert, a powerhouse litigator from Oklahoma City whose career is a testament to grit, vision, and unwavering preparation.

From Pilot to CPA to Trial Attorney

Randy’s journey wasn’t a straight line to the courtroom. Growing up in a small town, he developed early passions in aviation and discipline. By 20, he was already a flight instructor and commercial pilot, teaching lawyers how to fly — many of whom ironically advised him not to pursue law.

Instead, Randy built a career as a Certified Public Accountant and management consultant. But while analyzing financial data and advising companies sharpened his skills, his heart was drawn back to trial work. Clarence Darrow was one of his heroes, and eventually, Randy chose the path of litigation. His CPA background and consulting experience gave him a unique edge — one that later proved critical when managing massive volumes of documents, data, and complex disputes in the courtroom.

A Trial Philosophy Rooted in the Jury

In the interview, Randy credits one of his biggest influences, jury consultant James Burgund, with reshaping his perspective on trials. “A trial is about the jurors,” Randy explains. “They are the most important people in the room. They are the protagonists — the ones saving the day.”

This philosophy reframes how cases are built and argued. Instead of focusing only on the client, Randy crafts narratives where jurors see themselves as the heroes of justice. Combined with his disciplined use of focus groups — from concept discussions to mock trials — his method ensures that no blind spot goes untested. “Almost every time, the focus group changes my perspective,” he admits, underscoring the humility and curiosity that fuel his success.

Preparation as a Way of Life

If there is one theme that defines Randy Calvert, it’s preparation. Colleagues, judges, and even opponents have noted his exhaustive trial readiness. One judge once described his preparatory work as “brilliant.”

For Randy, preparation is not just a duty; it’s insurance against the unbearable thought of losing. He likens it to directing a movie — each deposition, exhibit, and witness forms a chapter of a story carefully structured for maximum impact. He avoids shortcuts and embraces patience, even in grueling depositions, to extract the precise statements that can later sway a jury.

As he notes, “Preparation is everything. It’s not just best for your client; it’s best for you. The return on preparation is exponential.”

Landmark Achievements in Court

Randy’s reputation isn’t built on philosophy alone — his record speaks volumes.

  • Hebble v. Shell (2008): $66 million jury verdict for fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, ranked #6 of the “Top 10 Verdicts” by Lawyers USA.
  • Insurance Bad Faith (2010): Secured Oklahoma’s largest punitive damage award.
  • $27 million verdict: Against an insurer for bad faith refusal to settle.
  • $8 million verdict: Another insurance bad faith case.
  • Defense verdict: Prevented a $5.5 million fraud claim.

At the helm of Calvert Law Firm since 1990, Randy has led a team known for fearless trial preparation and record-setting results. The firm has secured more than $100 million in verdicts and is regularly trusted with referrals from some of Oklahoma’s largest firms and litigation boutiques.

His consistent recognition — Oklahoma Super Lawyer (2009–2024), “Best Attorney in Oklahoma City” by Oklahoma Magazine, and AV Preeminent peer review rating — reflects both peer respect and client trust.

Referrals, Co-Counseling, and the Lost Art of Trial

One of the interview’s highlights is Randy’s discussion of referrals and co-counsel work. “Trying cases is becoming a lost art,” he says. Many attorneys settle or avoid the courtroom, but when mediation fails and trial looms, they turn to seasoned trial lawyers like him.

He explains the difference between referrals (where he takes the case) and co-counseling (working shoulder-to-shoulder with another attorney). Both serve the same goal: maximizing recovery for the client while sharing expertise. As Randy points out, even giving up part of a fee makes sense when it improves results and allows more cases to be handled efficiently.

Lessons for the Next Generation of Trial Lawyers

When asked what advice he’d give to younger lawyers, Randy is direct: get into the courtroom. Mistakes are inevitable, but growth requires doing the work, not avoiding it. He recalls one early trial where jurors wanted to award more damages than he requested — a lesson in not undervaluing a case.

“Fear drives you to learn and prepare,” he shares. Even decades into his career, Randy insists that fear is a healthy motivator. It ensures lawyers put in the hours necessary to deliver justice.

Why Appear on 60 Minutes: Inside Trial Minds?

For lawyers considering joining the series, Randy’s episode demonstrates the power of visibility. In just one conversation, viewers see the human story behind the résumé — the pilot, the CPA, the litigator who transformed fear into preparation and preparation into victories.

Appearing on 60 Minutes: Inside Trial Minds does more than showcase credentials; it reveals the passion, values, and philosophies that clients and peers connect with. It’s high-caliber storytelling at a production standard rivaling national broadcast TV. For attorneys, it’s a platform that elevates reputation, builds trust, and creates a legacy that extends beyond verdicts.

Stepping Into the Spotlight

Randy Calvert’s feature is more than an interview; it’s an unfiltered look into the making of a trial lawyer who thrives on preparation and thrives in the courtroom. His story shows that excellence comes from mastering details, respecting jurors, and never losing sight of the client’s best interest.

60 Minutes: Inside Trial Minds, produced by CG Media and presented by The Casely Group, is designed to capture exactly these stories. It’s where the heat of the courtroom meets the art of storytelling.
